Pierre-Alain Volondat began studying the piano at the age of seven and, due to his meteoric progress, soon entered the Orléans Conservatory. In 1979, he continued his musical studies at the Paris Conservatory (piano and writing classes). There he obtained an impressive list of prizes – no less than three first prizes: harmony (first named), chamber music and, in 1982, first prize in piano. At the same time, he worked on the piano with Vera Moore, a disciple of Leonard Borwick, himself a pupil of Clara Schumann.

On May 28, 1983, at the age of twenty, he was awarded first prize in piano, the Queen Elizabeth of Belgium International Music Competition in Brussels, the Queen Fabiola Prize, the Audience Prize and the Vermilion Medal, a unique combination in the history of this prestigious competition.

Pierre-Alain Volondat leads an international career mainly in Belgium, France and Japan. His repertoire ranges from Bach to Xenakis, and he is a composer himself.

In 2008, his student is Alexandre Kantorow, future gold medalist at the International Tchaikovsky Piano Competition in June 20191, who says he particularly appreciated his former teacher.

Having retired, he currently works at the Conservatoire de Montmorency (95170, France).

He has been a volunteer for almost 15 years with the amateur theatre association, Les Baladins de la Vallée3.
