Yonathan AVISHAI

Mayu SHPIRO

Duos hold a special place in the world of music.

The meeting of two musicians always offers a uniquely intimate and focused musical experience.

Cellist Mayu Shviro and pianist Yonathan Avishai create a poetic universe together, where contemporary composition engages in dialogue with ancient musical traditions, striking a subtle balance between written scores and improvisation.

In this unique duo, jazz allows the two musicians to express their multifaceted identities, drawing on Azerbaijani and Yemeni traditions as well as their Israeli culture.

With great sincerity, they share both the joys and the sorrows of their region and their history.

Born in Jerusalem to parents of Japanese and Iraqi descent, Mayu began studying Western classical cello at the age of six. At eighteen, she discovered modal music and was immediately captivated by the power and beauty of these traditions. She decided to dedicate herself to this musical realm, embarking on a journey with her cello through Arab, Turkish, and Azerbaijani musical traditions.

One of the most sought-after pianists on the international jazz scene and a regular collaborator with trumpeter Avishai Cohen, Yonathan Avishai has established himself as one of contemporary jazz’s most distinctive voices.

His playing, marked by great finesse and deep sensitivity, creates the impression that he is composing silence just as much as he is sculpting sound. A true storyteller, he transforms every concert into a deeply human musical experience, imbued with genuine soul.
