Suzanne ben Zakoun
Suzanne Ben Zakoun, a French pianist and singer of Spanish-Algerian descent, is a multifaceted artist. Born into a family of musicians, she began playing the piano in her early childhood with her mother, Laurence Karsenti, at the Orléans Conservatory. At the age of fifteen, she was admitted to the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse de Paris in the class of Emmanuel Strosser and then Frank Braley, where she earned her Master’s degree in classical piano.
She also enriched her skills in the generative improvisation class, the chamber music class, and the jazz piano class of Paul Lay at the Conservatoire du 13e arrondissement. Fueled by a deep love of singing, she later studied oriental singing with Rachid Brahim-Djelloul, with repertoires ranging from the Maghreb to the Black Sea.
Her solid training as a classical pianist has allowed her to perform as a solo pianist or in various chamber music ensembles in numerous classical venues and festivals, with musicians such as Philippe Berrod, Vicens Prats, Yska Ben Zakoun, Elsa Moatti, Noé Clerc and many others… Magazines such as « le Télégramme », « La Nouvelle République », « La Lettre du Musicien », « Mag’Centre » praise her by devoting glowing articles to her.
His interest in other musical cultures and his passion for singing have led him to very varied projects with ensembles such as the Suzanne Ben Zakoun Trio (compositions, Judeo-Spanish songs arranged for jazz trio formation), the Al-Andalûs ensemble (Arab-Andalusian and Judeo-Arab repertoire), the Tierra Del Fuego ensemble (tango/jazz), the Seyyir Quartet (repertoire from the Maghreb and the Middle East) and to participate in shows mixing theater and music (“Dans les Pas de Cendrillon” based on the music of Prokofiev, “Deux Pianos et le regard perdu vers la mer”…) as well as musicals (Quasimodo, le sonneur de Notre-Dame, Love Songe Thérapie, Frankenstein Junior).
Pianist, singer, improviser and composer, Suzanne constantly creates and touches on numerous repertoires, bringing a personal and original vision.
