Pierre-Alain Volondat began studying the piano at the age of seven and soon entered the Conservatoire d’Orléans due to his rapid progress. In 1979, he continued his musical studies at the Paris Conservatoire (piano and writing classes). There he obtained an impressive record of achievements – no less than three first prizes: harmony (first nominated), chamber music and, in 1982, first prize for piano. At the same time he studied piano with Vera Moore, a disciple of Leonard Borwick, himself a pupil of Clara Schumann.
On 28 May 1983, at the age of twenty, he won the Queen Elisabeth of Belgium International Music Competition in Brussels, the first prize for piano, the Queen Fabiola Prize, the Audience Prize and the Vermeil Medal, a unique combination in the history of this prestigious competition.
Pierre-Alain Volondat has an international career, mainly in Belgium, France and Japan. His repertoire ranges from Bach to Xenakis, and he is himself a composer.
In 2008, his pupil was Alexandre Kantorow, future gold medallist at the International Tchaikovsky Piano Competition in June 2019, who says he particularly appreciated his former teacher.
Having retired, he now works at the Montmorency Conservatory.
For nearly fifteen years, he has been a volunteer for the amateur theatre association, Les Baladins de la Vallée.
